Cool That Hot Car Down – How To Stay Cooler In Heat Waves
Disclaimer #1:
(Disclaimer #2 located at end of this post)
If you live in most parts of Alaska or
Iceland this is NOT for you.
Summer Sucks!
And if you disagree, and I know millions do-
I’ve seen the movies, heard the songs and
read the vacation propaganda recklessly
put out there to lure the unsuspecting out
of the AC and into the, well …non AC -
then you are just not as smart as I am.
There I said it, and I’m glad!
I don’t even care if you get your panties
in a wad about it.
Excessively hot heat is just W-R-O-N-G
on every level.
I do, however, care deeply about your health, I am-
after all- your resident, local and heretofore adored
(right?…hello out there… right? Phew. OK Thanks)
health and wellness maniac.
Or to put it another way, I’m Your RAD WANG
RAD – Respected~Adored~Dedicated
WANG – Wellness~Anti-Aging~Nutrition Guru
Didn’t know you had one of them, did ya?
So in that vein, let me share a trick, tip and overall
just really good idea for you to use EVERY time you
are out and about in this lousy, stinking, hairstyle drooping,
mascara melting, sweat producing, aroma inducing
good-for-nothing-but-melting-the-bottoms-of-my-shoes heat.
Anytime your vehicle (car/truck/van etc) has been sitting in
the heat, BEFORE you get into it, do this:
Roll the drivers side window all the way down.
Go to the other side of the car and open and
close the door.
Do this (opening/closing -kind of fanning it )
about 5 or 6 times or even 17 times if you
have the time and don’t mind looking like an idiot.
Just do this normally (you are not showing off
or auditioning for the Mr Strength Contest)
Make sure that you KEEP YOUR HANDS, FINGERS,
KNEES, SHINS AND HEAD OUT OF THE WAY, so
they do not get scratched, dinged, smashed, or
otherwise caught in it (the door).
And please do not be a jerk and slam your stupid car
door into the car parked next to you-unless that car is
really junkie- ’cause then who would even know, right?
(Well, God would but that is another topic for another time)
What’s with all of this door fanning???
You are circulating the air. It draws/pushes the hot air out through
the open window by using the opening/closing of the opposite door,
and pulling the cool(er) air (HA HA this is funny…well, not really!)
from outside the car to the inside-thus lowering the inside temperature
of the car.
You can sometimes lower the inside car temperature by as much
as 10-15 degrees-which is nothing to blow off about and could even
be just enough to keep you from getting sick.
Of course, if you suffer from any kind of illness that would/could
get worse when you do any activity in the heat-then
DO NOT DO THIS.
You would be better to have your
husband,
father,
sister,
aged- though healthy/spry-mother,
grown kids (it’s really too hard to get the younger ones
to stop whining about how hot they are),
neighbor,
friend,
local school board president
the mayor,
you know, virtually anyone you can trust ( manipulate) who
doesn’t mind going outside and sweating while performing silly
looking feats of heroic proportions for no monetary compensation.
That’s it for today. My work here is done.
I have passed on all of my knowledge for
“Cooling Down That Darn Car”, well, other than
the more obvious “Park the sucker in an air conditioned
garage and only take it outside between
Nov 15 and Mar 1″ rule. (which is the rule I live by)
Of course, we already know from the aforementioned
songs, movies and brochures, that none of you less
evolved summertards are gonna waste a good
heat wave and do that!

Is Green Tea A Weight Loss Tea?
Test it and find out, Duh!
As a whole, people, especially Americans, are more overweight than at any other time in the
history of our world (and NO, I do not know this from having been around since the beginning-
so thanks for deleting that thought as quickly as you did).
It wouldn’t really be that big of a deal if obesity wasn’t such a risk factor, if not
THE MAIN risk factor, for a whole host of major health problems.
There has been a lot of buzz surrounding green tea and weight loss, but is there any truth
to the potential effectiveness of such a diet?
There is substantial evidence that the Chinese have been harvesting green tea for at least
the past 4,000 years. So, while most of us here in the West haven’t a clue as to the varied
uses or amazing effectiveness of most ancient herbs, roots or remedies (we are incredibly
sophisticated and have risen above such nonsense, after all) tend to think of it as nothing
more than a beverage, people in the East have long revered it for its medicinal qualities as
well.
Of course, the aforementioned ultra sophisticated Western world views medicine* and
the practice thereof in a completely different way than the East, when measuring what
works and what doesn’t for improving or bandaging – rather than curing (no shock here)
people’s health.
*Medicine being only those substances that come from a lab and are sold at places called
pharmacy’s for large piles of what we work ourselves to death for (usually referred to
as money by those of us who are less verbose)
It’s almost as though they think that if something is natural or (gasp) NOT labeled a
medicine by us (the medicine labeling western part of the world), then it can’t be
effective and should probably at the most be banned or at the least be thoroughly
ashamed of itself.
Well, the good news is that viewpoint is starting to change, at least where green tea
and its use in weight loss is concerned.
A physiologist by the name of William Rumpler has been studying how green tea
effects the oxidation of fat and the expenditure of energy in the body. In simple terms,
he’s seeing how green tea boosts metabolism and how a higher metabolism helps
increase weight loss. What follows are some of his early findings.
When the study was conducted, the only compound they were able to identify as
possibly aiding weight loss was the naturally occurring caffeine. As a control, they
had some participants consume water that had the same amount of caffeine.
Those who drank the green tea had greater weight loss than those who drank
just the caffeinated water.
So, what does this mean? Well to those in the East it means, ” Duh, We told you so!”
(Do they use “Duh!” in the East?)
To those in the West it means, “Hummm, how can we, Big Pharma (that is Big DrugCo
to you and me), find a way to patent this inexpensive natural herb, thereby making
it illegal for regular folks to get it without a prescription from a doctor who knows
nothing about it except what our Big Pharma Salesman tells him, so those regular
people can then pay us 5 times what it now costs at the vitamin store?
‘Jones, get research and production on that right away!”
…but I digress.
It also means that it isn’t the caffeine in green tea that’s making people lose weight.
Other studies have shown that green tea contains an exciting antioxidant called
catechin. Black tea has very little of this antioxidant as the fermentation processing
of black tea reduces it significantly.
OK, so what the heck is catechin? Glad you asked. Catechin is a powerful, water soluble
polyphenol and antioxidant and green tea contains four main catechin substances:
EC, ECg, EGC and EGCg, all of which are inclusively called catechin.
(What are polyphenols and antioxidants are lessons for another day-so stay tuned)
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most powerful of these catechins. EGCG as an
antioxidant is about 25-100 times more potent than vitamins C and E.
Catechin is showing some real potential in the war on obesity as it reduces how
much fat the body absorbs, and may help people feel full sooner.
One cup of green tea provides 10-40 mg of polyphenols and has antioxidant
effects greater than a serving* of broccoli, spinach, carrots, or strawberries.
*serving- any size glob of food that you place on your plate when you are
NOT being a pig and overeating. (or another lesson…maybe)
Not only is the high antioxidant activity of green tea beneficial for protecting
the body from oxidative damage due to free radicals but it is also proving to
be a great benefit to a healthy weight loss program because it blocks a function
of an enzyme that digests and absorbs sugar and helps to prevent diabetes -
which is an eventual killer and is almost totally preventable, by the way.
(another lesson for another day- boy you are Really going to have to
stay tuned)
Regardless of what is causing the weight loss, it appears that green tea does,
indeed, help in getting rid of excess pounds.
As if that weren’t enough, green tea has even more health benefits.
It reduces the risk of some cancers, lowers bad cholesterol and helps
flush toxins out of the body. Yeah, for toxin flushing. (Yep, you guessed it!
Another lesson for another day- sheesh, you’re gonna have to just sleep
with your computer [get a laptop-it's easier] on your nightstand with
HealthyBoomerZ.com up and open so you don’t miss any of my great scoops!)
More studies on tea are being conducted all the time, but the proof that is
already out there is pretty good.
Green tea weight loss diets, or more accurately, green tea used as a weight loss
supplement, are based on traditional Eastern medicine, and gaining approval
(finally) from those involved in the ultra sophisticated and utterly infallible
(the over use of adjectives and uncalled for sarcasm is strictly the author’s)
Western science, as well.
So, drinking a few cups of green tea a day should be all you need to take some
weight off AND turn you into a “Healthier Boomer”. (or a healthier non-boomer
for those of you born after 1964)
Round out the green tea with smarter eating, such as the elimination of that filthy
sneaky food group “Poison” AKA Simple Carbs, add a bit more activity and you
will take off even more weight, not to mention, becoming one step closer to
qualifying for membership in that highly respected, often dreamed of but
seldom obtained, prized club, ” The Healthy Boomer”…and who wouldn’t want that?
And that, my friends, is a no brainer. Well… if it isn’t it sure ought to be-and I just so
happen to know of a great supplement for that too- of course, that’s another lesson
for another day!
